Intro – Reigning in Righteousness
Theme Verse: Romans 5:17 - For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
Righteousness Before the Law (From Adam to Moses)
Bago ang Kautusan, ang tao ay itinuring na matuwid sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya. Ito’y makikita sa Hebrews 11 (called Hall of Faith traditionally) kung saan nakasulat ang mga nabuhay bago ang Kautusan: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham at iba pa. Bagamat limitado ang kapahayagan ng Diyos sa kanila, sila’y nanalig, nagtiwala at lumakad na may malapit na kaugnayan sa Diyos. Si Abraham ang isang malinaw na halimbawa ni Pablo na ang tao ay itinuturing na matuwid, hindi sa pamamagitan ng gawa o pagsunod sa mga tuntunin, kundi sa pananampalataya lamang. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.”(Romans 4:3) Faith preceded the Law.
God’s intent from the beginning of time is Righteousness by Faith! Faith was never God’s Plan B introduced only after the Law failed. Righteousness by faith already existed before the Law. So, before the law, righteousness was accounted through faith.
Righteousness During the Law (Old Covenant)
Sa ilalim ng Kautusan, ang katuwiran ay sinusukat ayon sa kaugnayan sa tipan at sa mga utos nito (covenant relationship). Ang katayuan at asal ng Israel ay tinataya (assessed) ayon sa mga kondisyon (terms) ng tipan na itinatag ng Diyos sa kanila [i.e.blessings for obedience; curses for disobedience]. Ngunit hindi ito nangangahulugan na wala nang pananampalataya. Ang pananampalataya nila (ng ilang Israelita, hindi lahat) ay nag-uugat sa kanilang kaugnayan sa Diyos at ito’y kanilang pinapakita (expressed) sa pamamagitan ng pagsunod sa Kautusan (covenant faithfulness and obedience). [Ex. of people whose righteousness was expressed through their faith: Moses, Joshua, Caleb, David, Rahab (Note: even Gentiles), Hezekiah, etc.)
The Law has no ability to produce righteousness in man because no one could obey ALL. Wala ni isa man ang nakasunod sa LAHAT ng nakasaad sa Kautusan, hindi dahil defective ang Kautusan kundi dahil sa kahinaan (weakness) ng tao. The Law is perfect and holy (it shows the perfection and holiness of God); the Law was God’s standard of righteousness - if obeyed ALL. Sapagkat walang sinuman ang ituturing ng Dios na matuwid sa pamamagitan ng pagsunod sa Kautusan. Sa halip, ipinapakita ng Kautusan sa tao na makasalanan siya. One purpose of the Law is to expose man’s inability to meet God’s righteous standard; to expose what is in their hearts ... their PRIDE... their wickedness/sin.
Ang isa pang layunin ng Kautusan ay: upang maging tagapag- alaga (tutor, guardian, school master, disciplinarian) ng Israel. Ang Kautusan ay naging tagapag-alaga natin hanggang sa dumating si Cristo, para sa pamamagitan ng pananampalataya sa kanya ay maituring tayong matuwid (Galatia 3:24) Ang Kautusan ay naidagdag (added) lamang; ito’y pansamantala lamang hanggang sa dumating si Cristo. Ang nakasaad sa Kautusan ay mga anino (shadows and figures) lamang ng isang darating; at si Cristo ang katuparan at kaganapan ng mga ito. Si Cristo ang hangganan (end) ng Kautusan (Roma 10:4)
