1. The Curse of the Fall
Dahil sa pagsuway ng unang Adan, naranasan niya at ng mga taong sumunod sa kanya ang bunga ng kasalanan. Bagamat hindi siya ang tuwirang sinumpa, kundi ang lupa, “Cursed is the ground...”(Genesis 3:17a), nagdulot ito ng kahirapan, kamatayan at pagkasira (corruption) ng ibang nilikha. “Curse”(Hebrew word “arar”) means to bind, restrict, subject to limitation. Subalit, ang pagbagsak ng tao sa kasalanan ay hindi katapusan ng kwento, mayroong tumubos sa pagkakasala ng tao – si Cristo.
2. The Curse of the Law
Ang lahat ng nagtitiwala sa pagsunod sa Kautusan ay nasa ilalim ng isang sumpa. Sapagkat nasusulat, “Sumpain ang hindi sumusunod sa LAHAT ng nakasulat sa aklat ng Kautusan.”(Galatians 3:10 MBBTAG) Meaning, kapag ang isang tao ay umaasa sa Kautusan (Mosaic Law) bilang batayan ng pagiging matuwid sa Diyos, inilalagay niya ang sarili niya sa ilalim ng sumpa. Remember that the Law is a system that demands perfect obedience. Once you choose Law, you accept its terms: either you obey ALL, or fail ONCE, you are guilty of ALL. “Ang tumutupad sa buong Kautusan pero lumabag sa isa sa mga ito ay lumabag na rin sa buong Kautusan.” (Santiago 2:10 ASND).

Tandaan, hindi ang Kautusan ang problema (because the Law is holy), subalit kung ito ang gagawing batayan ng tao
upang maligtas o upang maging matuwid o katanggap- tanggap siya sa Diyos, winawalang-saysay nito ang ginawa ni Cristo. Ito ang nilinaw ni Pablo sa mga Gentile believers sa Galatia na nahihikayat ng mga Jewish Christian teachers
na magpatuli (circumcise) at sundin ang mga kautusan ni Moses (Mosaic Law) upang maging katanggap-tanggap kay Cristo. Sapat na ang ginawa ni Cristo upang maging matuwid ang nananalig sa Kanya; hindi na kailangan pang mapailalim pa sa Kautusan, dahil sila ay nasa ilalim na ng biyaya (grace) ng Diyos. The Law was not defective but it can only reveal/expose sin, not fix it; but Christ ended that system.“Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to everyone who believe.” (Romans 10:4).
[Note: The Law (moral, civil/judicial, ceremonial laws, including its covenant of blessings and curses) applies exclusively to Israel. Gentiles were not under the Mosaic Covenant; however, if a Gentile places himself under the Law as a means of righteousness, it also applies to them. (Romans 2:14)]
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law having become a curse for us...(Galatians 3:13 NKJV). Ano ba ang “sumpa” ng Kautusan? Sa konteksto ng ginawang kasunduan o tipan (covenant) sa pagitan ng Israel at ng Diyos (Exodus 19:8), ang sumpa ay parusang (penalty/sanction/consequence) bunga ng kanilang paglabag; ito ang mga itinakda ng batas o Kautusan (Mosaic Law). Biblically, a “curse” is a legal judgment; a judicial consequence for disobedience; it is pronounced under a covenant; and enforced by Law. Bagamat banal, mabuti at matuwid ang Kautusan, ang pagsuway o paglabag dito ay nagdadala ng kahatulan sa sinumang nakapailalim dito. Take note: God is not the source of curse. He only enforced (administered) the covenant terms.
Through faith in Christ, we, Gentile believers, receive the superior blessing of Abraham – the promised Seed, Christ Himself.
